DARTFORD FOLK CLUB

DARTFORD FOLK CLUB UPDATE

BBC Radio 2 Folk Club of the Year 2008 – check out the following link:

http://www.dartfordfolk.org.uk/dfc_award08.htm

Dartford Folk Club meets on Tuesday from 8.30 to 11.00 p.m. at
Dartford Working Men’s Club in Essex Road, Dartford.

*  Floor Singers Welcome – ring Pam or Alan on 01322 222553.

*  Drinks at club prices, including up to 15 real ales!  Coffee & tea
also available.

FORTHCOMING GUESTS:

FEBRUARY 2ND – DAVE SWARBRICK

http://www.folkicons.co.uk/swarb.htm

Dave Swarbrick first picked up a fiddle at the age of 6 and turned
professional with the Ian Campbell Folk Group.  Heavily involved in
the 60’s folk revival, firstly with Martin Carthy and then Fairport
Convention, he has been called “the most influential fiddle player bar
none”.  Famously ‘killed off’ by the Telegraph in 1999, Swarb had a
double lung transplant in 2004.  He has now regained much of his old
zest, touring in duos with Martin Carthy and Alistair Hulett and,
recently, returning to solo work.

FEBRUARY 9TH – MARTYN WYNDHAM-READ

http://www.martynwyndhamread.com/

Martyn, who will be performing with Iris Bishop (Concertinas,
Accordion) and Gary Holder (Bass), has been a stalwart of the folk
scene since the 1970’s.  Most of his music comes from Australia, where
he lived in the 1960’s (working on a South Australian sheep station)
and has since re-visited many times.  He is an engaging performer,
combining songs, recitations, stories and anecdotes of outback life.

FEBRUARY 16TH – TOM MCCONVILLE TRIO

http://www.tommcconville.co.uk/

The Newcastle Fiddle Player, Tom McConville, is a fine player and
singer who performs both traditional and contemporary music.  A
professional musician since 1971, he is the leading exponent of the
compositions of James Hill, the 19th Century Newcastle fiddler.  Tom
has worked with many leading musicians over the years, including Bob
Fox, Kieron Halpin, Chris Newman and Pauline Cato.  Tonight he is
joined by David Newey (Guitar, Vocals) and Phil Murray (Acoustic Bass
Guitar).

FEBRUARY 23RD – WIZZ JONES

http://www.wizzjones.com/wizzandsim.html

Wizz Jones is a bit of an enigma.  He has busked with Rod Stewart and
Alex Campbell.  Eric Clapton, John Renbourn and Ralph McTell call him
an important influence.  He enjoyed great success in the 1970’s.  Yet
in the 80’s he almost disappeared from view.  However, he has long
been a favourite at Dartford and we are delighted that there has been
renewed interest in his music during the last few years.

COMING UP IN MARCH

March 2nd – Mad Agnes (USA) (http://www.madagnes.com/)

March 9th – Tom Lewis (http://www.tomlewis.net/)

March 16th – Keith Pearson’s Coup de Grass
(http://www.keithpearson.co.uk/CDG5.htm)

March 23rd – Allan Taylor (http://www.allantaylor.com/)

March 30th – Tom Kitching & Gren Bartley (http://www.tomandgren.co.uk/)

For more information on the club (including directions on how to get
there), listings of guest performers past, present and future and a
tribute to Paul Homer, our late editor, please visit our website at

Wicked Welcomes Rachel Tucker

Wicked Welcomes Rachel Tucker

Posted by Linda on 15/1/10 • Categorized as Wicked

Wicked is continuing to build after its most successful year ever and is bringing in not one but two new witches! Current witches Alexia Khadime (Elphaba) and Dianne Pilkington (Glinda) leave the show on a record breaking high note and will play their final performances on Saturday 27 March 2010. Bound to be a very emotional evening!
(If you want tickets for this one you must act fast – Click through to see if there are Wicked theatre breaks available for Alexia and Diane’s final performance. By the way there’s a Free Hotel Offer on weekday Wicked Theatre Breaks until the end of March)

Wicked

Wicked

Rachel Tucker as Elphaba

Wicked Welcomes Rachel Tucker racheltuckergreenI’m a big fan of Rachel Tucker. I thought she had a great voice when she was in I’d Do Anything and I absolutely loved her in We Will Rock You. She was playing Meat the night I saw her but I believe she made a great success of the lead role, Scaramouche, on the few occasions she got to play it. Rachel will join Wicked as the new Elphaba and I can’t wait to hear her sing “Defying Gravity”. The voice and the song should combine beautifully and give us yet another interpretation of a great standard. So as one Nancy (Jodie) bows out the West End will see another graduate of the I’d Do Anything programme take centre stage. Perhaps this will convince the critics that reality casting shows do actually uncover worthwhile talent. Don’t hold your breath!

Like Kerry Ellis, a previous much loved Elphaba, Rachel will bring her own loyal fan base to the show and no doubt to this post. Hi all :-)

Oz Trivia – Rachel is no stranger to Oz having played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz at Belfast’s Lyric Theatre.

Louise Dearman as Glinda

Louise joins the cast of Wicked as Glinda. She’s been widely acclaimed in her lead role in the touring production of Evita. It will be interesting to see what she makes of the role of Glinda and how she stamps her own personality on it. Louise’s voice is described by her agents as: pure, melting soprano voice, with a surprisingly strong belt.
Having listened to a sample I have to agree, lovely! But don’t just rely on my judgment have a listen for yourself:

London Weekend Breaks with double theatre

London Weekend Breaks can be organised in the same way as midweek theatre breaks with just one night in a central London hotel, the big evening at the show and then return home the next day, whether it’s a Friday night out or a Saturday, but it’s also possible to go the whole hog and spend the whole weekend in London right through from Friday afternoon until sometime on Sunday. Those in the know will manage to fit in more than one trip to the theatre during their away break as well, by booking two night London weekend breaks with one set of theatre tickets included, and then sorting out additional theatre only tickets for themselves by buying day seats from one of the theatres or else same day tickets from the half price tkts booth in Leicester Square.

5 Other things to do on London Weekend Breaks

London weekend breaks are not just about the theatre. Here are five other suggestions for things to do in London.

  1. Visit the Natural History and Science museums in Kensington
  2. Shopping in Covent Garden Market
  3. A Thames river trip
  4. London Eye
  5. Walk in the royal parks

London Shows and Hotel Deals

London Shows and Hotel Deals

Posted by Linda on 13/1/10 • Categorized as Hotel and Theatre deals, London Shows

About London shows and hotel deals

London shows and hotel deals are usually offered as a package by the theatre break agencies, some of them will let you add in train tickets (usually at a considerable discount). You can also add a variety of extras including pre-theatre meals, sight seeing trips and entrance to many of the major London tourist attractions.

London Shows

You can choose from a huge number of London shows including first class musicals, serious plays, side-splitting comedies. If none of these take your fancy you can opt for ballets, operas and even concerts. Three of the most consistently popular London shows in the last year have all been musicals.

Wicked (London) has had a spectacular year with record box office takings. The story of what happened before Dorothy got to Oz goes from strength to strength and looks set to continue its run at the Apollo indefinitely.

London Shows and Hotel Deals

Oliver has had an amazing first year and continues to be popular. If you want to see Jodie Prenger (I’d Do anything winner) as Nancy you need to go before the end of March. Those of you who wait for the summer will also get a treat as ex-Wicked star Kerry Ellis moves into the role of Nancy. Fagin is currently being played by Griff Rhys Jones.

We Will Rock You is a great show for rockers of all ages. The show is full of energy and the music of Queen meshes beautifully with Ben Elton’s witty plot line. I just loved We Will Rock you. It is a wonderful ‘feel good’ evening and a perfect and popular choice of show.

Hotel Deals

London Shows and Hotel Deals londonshowsandhoteldeals 300x225

Show and Stay have a great hotel deal on at the moment. They are offering a free one night hotel stay in selected 3* hotels when you buy your tickets for a choice of 13 shows. The deal is available for Mondays to Thursdays only and runs until March 31st.

London shows and hotel deals are available all year round but special offers like this one are limited and tend to get snapped up fairly quickly. If you want to be sure of getting the show and dates you want you will need to act fast. With prices starting from only £45 per person and limited availability this offer will not hang around. Check now to see if your dates and show are available.

New Employment Rules – Jan 2010

 New Employment Rules

SICKDAYS
We will no longer accept a doctor's certificate as proof of sickness. If you are able to get to the doctor, you are able to come into work.

MARTENITY LEAVE

Kort Kort pregnant is banned. You must first apply to your superiors and with their approval you’ll then be allowed to do pregnancy. It will only be allowed once in 10yrs and you only get 1 month maternity leave. No male shall get leave related to her wife’s pregnancy, sickness or even death (he is not a midwife, a doctor nor an undertaker).

SURGERY
Operations are now banned. As long as you are an employee here, you need all your organs. You should not consider having anything removed. We hired you intact. To have something removed constitutes a breach of employment.

HOLIDAYS
Each employee will receive 104 holidays per year. They are called Saturday and Sunday.

BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing you can do for dead friends or relatives. Every effort should be made to have non-employees to attend to the arrangements. In rare cases where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled for the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your lunch-hour and subsequently leave one hour early, provided your share of the work is done.

ABSENT FOR YOUR OWN DEATH
This will be accepted as an excuse. However, we require at least two weeks’ notice to allow time for you to train your own replacement.

TOILET USE
Entirely too much time is being spent in the toilets. In the future, we will follow the practice of going in alphabetical order. For instance: All employees whose names begin with 'A' will go from 8.00 to 8.20, employees whose names begin with 'B' will go from 8.20 to 8.40 and so on. If you are unable to go at your allotted time, it will be necessary to wait until the next day when your turn comes again. In extreme emergencies employees may swap their time with a co-worker. Both workers' supervisors must approve this exchange in writing.
In addition, there is now a strict 3-minute time limit in the toilets. At the end of 3 minutes, an alarm will sound, the toilet paper will retract, and the door will open..

LUNCH BREAK
Skinny people get an hour for lunch as they need to eat more so they can look healthy, normal size people get 30 minutes for lunch to maintain their average figure. Fat people get 5 minutes for lunch because that's all the time needed to drink a Slimfast and take a diet pill.

DRESS CODE
It is advised that you must come to work dressed according to your salary. If we see you wearing designer clothing we will assume that you are doing well financially and therefore do not need a pay rise.

Thank you for your loyalty to our company. We are here to provide a positive employment experience. Therefore, all questions, comments, concerns, complaints, frustrations, irritations, aggravations, insinuations, allegations, accusations, contemplations, consternations or input should be directed elsewhere.

Have a nice day

From the Love Never Dies blog

Niamh Perry’s blog

I’m back again to fill you all in on the past few days of rehearsals. Most of the cast began on Monday [4th January] morning but by next Monday [11th] the whole company from every department will come together for an eagerly anticipated “Meet and Greet”. Rumour has it that the design team have put together a powerpoint presentation… I can’t wait! We have already started to set a few dance numbers (which are looking fabulous) and you can sense the excitement in the air.

For me, finally starting to put this masterpiece into action has been pretty overwhelming. As I said in my last blog, I have been lucky enough to have been involved in Love Never Dies from the very first workshop over 18 months ago.

I have also been asked to fill you in on my back story. Many of you won’t know this, but I first met Andrew (The Lord) when I became a finalist for the BBC show “I’d Do Anything” which was the TV search for a new talent to play ‘Nancy’ in Oliver!, in which Andrew was the judge. And although I didn’t win (which I think is lucky, as I wouldn’t be involved in Love Never Dies!), I gained so much priceless support from the legend himself, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber.

It is because of his support and encouragement that I am blessed with the chance to create the role of “Fleck.”

I had my wig fitting yesterday with an awesome man named Campbell who covered my head in cling film, sticky-tape and red marker- I looked hot- NOT. I’ve never worn a wig before so this is a new experience all together!

I must dash here, I have a costume fitting in a few hours. It feels like I’ve been waiting for this for months! The excitement is taking over. Maybe they will let me fill you in on a few secrets…

Till then, much love and too much excitement…

Niamh xx

London Theatre breaks to Love Never Dies are already on sale and teh expectation is mounting week by week, especially now that the proper rehearsals are underway.
